Features & Directions
The Repelling Formulation is based on long known data that the sulfur compounds from garlic repel gophers and moles. What makes Plant Pro-Tec Gopher & Mole Repellents unique is their longevity and ease of use.
Releasing the Repelling Odor - The
rubber stopper that contains the Repelling odor
during storage and transport must be removed before the Repellent is put into the tunnel (see diagram).
Repelling Odor is evident
for 10 to 12 months - Once the rubber
stopper is removed, the repelling odor
will be evident for 10 to 12 months.
The longevity of Plant Pro-Tec Repellents
is what makes our product unique. The
repelling odor lasts a long time because
of the cone on the inside of the Repellent.
The cone is permeable to the repelling
odor but is impermeable to air. In other
words, the cone allows the repelling odor
out but prevents oxidation of the
compounds that make up the repelling
odor. Most animals’ sense of smell is greater than ours.
Installing Plant Pro-Tec Repellents - Gopher and mole activity is generally greatest where the soil is moist and there is an adequate food supply. Lawns and gardens are generally ideal places for gophers and moles. Gopher activity is obvious by the fan shaped soil mounds it makes over the tunnel system. Gophers feed on roots or below ground stems. The gopher tunnel may be 2 to 4 inches in diameter and 2 to 18 inches below the surface. The mole mounds are generally symmetrical with the plughole in the center. Mole tunnels are about the same size as gopher tunnels but generally more shallow. Mole tunnels may be obvious from the surface. Moles feed mostly on grubs. As soon as activity is observed it important to take action against them.
Plant Pro-Tec Repellents must be placed in the gopher or mole tunnel. Wherever there is a mound, there will be a tunnel. Locate the tunnel with a probe (See Figure 1) . The probe
can be a long screwdriver, a sharpened
rod, or whatever will make a hole about
3/8 inch in diameter, which is the
diameter of the Repellent, and reach
deep enough to locate the tunnel. The
probe should be pushed into the soil
until it ’gives’ and suddenly drops 2
to 4 inches. The sudden drop indicates
that you have found the tunnel. If
there is no sudden drop. try probing in
another area until a sudden drop occurs.
Probe around a mound and not through a
mound. The mound consists of loose dirt that will collapse into the tunnel.
When the tunnel is located, remove the rubber stopper and drop the repellent into the tunnel. Once the Repellent is in the tunnel, cover the hole with dirt to seal the sulfur compounds of the garlic in the tunnel (Figure 2). Those sulfur compounds will permeate through the tunnel system until there is a blockage. Because of the slow release of the sulfur compounds from the Repellent, the tunnel system opened to the sulfur compounds will not be available to the gopher or mole for 10 to 12 months. Plant Pro-Tec Repellents should be used according to the situation. Therefore, the greater the activity, the more Repellents should be used. In an area with a lot of activity it is better to start in the center or next to a barrier like a foundation or driveway and move the animals out. Starting at the edge of an area and moving them in just makes the problem worse. It is important to be persistent. If there is more activity because the gopher or mole has blocked the tunnel with dirt, put more Repellents into the new tunnels. Always try to move the animal to the edge of an area. Plant Pro-Tec Repellents can be used in yards and/or gardens. The repelling formulation, which consists of organic, edible ingredients, remains within the biodegradable plastic body. Plant Pro-Tec Repellents can be used as a preventative measure by placing them in planting holes, whether for flowers, shrubs, or bulbs.
Storage & Disposal of Plant Pro-Tec Repellents - Store Repellents in a cool, dry place inaccessible to children and pets. The shelf life of Repellents with the rubber stopper in place should be one or more years. To dispose of used or unused Repellents, wrap them in newspaper and discard in trash.
Plant Pro-Tec Gopher & Mole Repellents are packaged 12 to a bag. The bag is gusseted, easy to open, and resealable.
